I originally posted this question on another thread, where someone reported a similar problem (but a solution was never posted). Having received no replies, I thought I would start a new thread and see if that gets any more attention. I have a Kindle Paperwhite and a MacBook Pro running Mountain Lion (OS X v 10.8.4). While trouble shooting another issue (the Kindle would not upload the latest firmware update), I discovered that my MacBook Pro does not recognize my Kindle when I plug it into the USB port.
The Kindle app should resume where you left off even if you read it on another device, so you shouldn't need to do this to continue reading from a book you started on your Kindle. The top menu gives you a number of options.
Likewise, the Kindle does not enter 'USB mode' - it doesn't seem to recognize that it has been plugged into a USB port on my computer. Other USB devices (a USB key and a USB hard drive) are recognized and mount just fine.
Also, the Kindle does begin charging when I plug it into my Mac's USB port. Finally, I should mention that the Kindle was recognized and mounted when I connected it the USB port of my PC at work (using the same USB cable that I had been using to connect it to my M. An update to anyone who might be trying to help me: I made the pilgrimage to the Genius Bar at my local Apple Store today. Not surprisingly, they say that this is a problem with the Kindle and that there is nothing they can do. However, they did point out a few things of interest: (1) The technician launched 'About this Mac' and pulled up a complete system report for my computer. The USB ports are listed, and whenever a USB peripheral is plugged in it is identified in the report.
However, the Kindle was.NOT. identified in the system report when we plugged it into the Mac. (2) At my request, the technician pulled a 'floater' mac from the store and we tried plugging the Kindle into its USB port. Same result as with my machine: the Kindle did not go into USB mode and did not boot on the Mac desktop. I tried plugging in a USB key that I brought with me, to test the machine's USB port, and the USB key booted onto the desktop just fine. We also launched 'About this Mac' and g. Thanks Pineapple, It was worth a try.
Unfortunately, however, it did not work. I did pull my old Kindle Touch out of storage, charged it up, linked it back to my account on Amazon, and tried plugging it into the macbook's usb port.
Like the Paperwhite, the Kindle Touch was not recognized. I also called my Mom, who has a Kindle Paperwhite and an older Macbook runing OS 10.7.5 (the previous operating system). I had to walk her through the process, but she plugged her Kindle into her Mac's USB port and it was recognized just fine. All of this has me thinking that there is some kind of a software problem; that it isn't just my Kindle. But I cannot decide if the problem is with software on the Kindle, or on my Mac.
Still, as Mary says, you would think there would be more about it on the forum if this was the case (and that Amazon's tech support people would know about it). I'm frustrated and ready to give up. I have the 'Send to Kindle' app, which let's you drag and drop files fr.
TuxGirl - Please do me a favor: check your paperwhite and tell me what Firmware version is installed. I see you are running Mac OS 10.8.4 like me, and I agree it should handle the kindle on your Macbook air the same way it handles my Kindle on the MacBook Pro.

So maybe it's that we have different firmware. My Kindle is using the latest firmware, 5.3.6, but it had the problem with the previous firmware version too. So this is probably a long shot.
Thanks for checking it all the same. PS - Have tried rebooting both the Kindle and the Mac.
I even reset the Kindle to factory settings. But has not worked. Hi Dragi - Actually that's a pretty good idea. I do have Parallels Desktop (a Window's emulator program), and didn't even think of using it.
Alas, no success. I guess that shouldn't surprise me.
It is an emulator. So I think that the mac has to recognize the USB device and then pass control of it on to the Windows emulator. Mary - Thanks for the suggestion. But I am in New York city, not in Philly. Went to the Apple Store here earlier this afternoon, but they weren't able to fix it.
Not surprisingly, the maintain that it is a Kindle problem and, ergo, that there is nothing they can do.
